Program Overview
Approximately twenty (20) rising high school students will receive full scholarships to participate in the four-week non-residential summer program. Scholarships will include the following:
- Workshops and Handouts
- Facility Usage
- Equipment and Supplies
- Travel (Field Trips)
- Lab Fees
- Speakers
- Lunch and T-Pass
In addition four scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to previous participants of a Summer Transportation Institute to attend the Summer Transportation Institute II. At this level II, participants will work on research projects of interest to the future of our transportation and serve as mentors for new participants to acquire additional leadership skills. STI II will be also non-residential and will run in parallel with the regular STI.
Notification of scholarship award will be made by the Summer Transportation Institute to each of the selected students. The following criteria will be used in the selection of scholarship recipients: Students must:
- be a rising 9th to 12th grader at the end of the current school year.
- have cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (minimum).
- have an interest in Engineering, Science, Transportation, or Technology related career.
- have at least one letter of recommendation.
- provide a typed, double-spaced 250-word essay entitled: (i) STI students: "How The Summer Transportation Institute Can Assist Me In Reaching My Career Goals"; (ii) STI II students: "How I applied what I learned from attending the Summer Transportation Institute."
- provide school official or unofficial transcript.
- submit fully completed STI and UMass Boston Youth application forms.
